Leakey with wife Mary, was a British paleoanthropologist and archaeologist whose work was important in establishing human evolutionary development in Africa, particularly through his discoveries in the Olduvai Gorge.
- His team made unprecedented discoveries of hominids millions of
years old linked to human evolution including H. habilis and H. erectus.
- He inspired
(and found sponsors for) field studies of chimpanzees, mountain
gorillas, and orangutans by Jane Goodall, Dian Fossey, and Birute Galdikas Brindamour.
